The elegantly reductive forms produced by Karin Blach Nielsen are determined, in part, as much by her interest in glazes as they are by the habits of her hands. “Exploring glazes is a ceramics tradition that I think is important to maintain and expand,” shares Karin. “They can reveal all the unique qualities of the clay. I knew from the beginning that if I concentrated on glazes, I would spend less time on questions of form and design.” As she searches for glazes that show a good color response and tactility, she sometimes discovers that a glaze she’s developed may metamorphose in the firing, but unexpected results can lead to new resolutions. “It’s magic,” says Karin, “and very addicting.”
